Life in Munich

Dein Apart

We are staying at a hotel that is called “Dein Apart”.  It is kind of like an extended stay hotel.  The rooms have little kitchenettes.  EF - the school - has their students stay here.  They hire residential advisors to also live here and help take care of any student needs.  The complex consists of three buildings.  The center building (on the left in the photo below) has the lobby, lounge area, restaurant and lots of places to relax. All our rooms are in the building on the right.  We are spread out all over.

Lounge area in the main building

Each room has two small beds, a TV, table and chairs.  There are lots of shelves.

The kitchenette.  There is a cooktop with two burners, a microwave, refrigerator, and even a tiny dishwasher. My biggest complaint is that all the shelving is up so high.

Having Fun

EF has an activities department that organizes lots of things to do each day, evening and weekend.  Our whole group went out to karaoke last week at an Indian restaurant.  All of them had a blast - they even got Mr. And Mrs. Mikesell on stage for a song.

Tour Around Town

We did get a walking tour around town on one of our first days here.  Here are some highlights.

The most popular place in Munich is the Marienplatz - with the famous Glockenspiel.  This is less than a block away from our EF classroom building.

Right next door to our classroom building is the Lego Munich store.  Of course, we have all been there.

If you cross the Marienplatz and walk less than a block, you get to this amazing outdoor market called the Viktualienmarkt.  They have all kinds of food, flowers, souvenirs, and more. It is wonderful place to get lot in.

There are several of these statues/water fountains around the market.  I don’t know if it is safe, but there were people filling their water bottles here.

Across town is the Residenz, the official residence of the rulers.  We get a specific tour of this later in the experience.

As you walk by the Residenz, there are four lion statues.  Legend is that if you rub the noses of 3 out of the 4 then you will have good luck.  But if you rub all 4 noses, then you are too greedy and will have bad luck.

Opera House

This sign cracked me up.

Deutsches Museum

One of the “classes” with Dr. Mikesell was to visit this science and technology museum for an afternoon.  David explained it to me as “The German Smithsonian”.  As we walked around he kept commenting on how many engineering lessons there were here.
