Arrival in Munich and the First Day of School!
On Monday, we had our second train journey, a longer one this time. We traveled to Munich and met our EF hosts. EF stands for Education First. It is an international organization that hosts exchange students and study abroad programs of all types, all over the world. Students will be taking German language classes here for the majority of the next three weeks.
Yes, I made the sign and made them take a “First Day of School” photo.

EF welcomed us at the train station and after taking us to our apartments, took us out to eat at a nice restaurant for a welcome dinner. Here are some photos.
After a night’s rest, we headed out before 8:00 am to the EF classrooms/campus in the city. It is literally just a few steps away from the Marienplatz! Students will be making this journey as part of their normal commute to school each weekday. It involves a bus and then a train. The campus building is very nice with lots of classroom space and common areas to hang out, have lunch, relax, etc.

The students had an introduction class with lots of policies, procedures, and orientation information. After lunch, they had their first German class. One activity was a scavenger hunt around the city. They had to find words that begin with each letter of the alphabet. Back in class, they practiced pronouncing them as they shared.
After a break, it was time for class with Dr. Mikesell. He will meet with the students a few times throughout the experience. Most of the “class time” for this part of the experience is actually going places, seeing sights, learning to navigate public transportation, etc. However, for this class session, we went over several reflection questions about the trip so far and had a discussion and activity. Here are some photos of them working to create the visual aid component of their answers in small groups.
Then it was time to head out, get some groceries for future meals, do some laundry, and just settle in. The students are also busy making plans for their “free weekend” coming up. They are all picking their own destination and creating their own adventures. Lots of exciting things happening every day!

Thanks for these blogs! Enjoying following along. Enjoy the free weekend!!
